May 2015 | Wrap Up

As you'll probably be able to see from the books that I read this month, I was really trying to get out of my reading slump. May consisted of contemporaries and graphic novels, both of which really help get back into reading. I also sort of participated in Bout of Books. I kind of fell off at the end, but I still managed to read an entire book in about three days!

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover
After much talk about how this is going to be made into a movie, I finally picked it up. The only other Colleen Hoover books I've read are the Hopeless books. Ugly Love sort of follows in the same vein where it's a new adult novel with a deeper/more serious back story. At times I didn't really understand why certain characters made the decisions they did, which left me a little frustrated, but overall I really enjoyed it (maybe not as much as Hopeless). 4/5

All I knew about this book going into it was that it dealt with suicide. Because it was going to revolve around that kind of topic, I was hoping it wouldn't go into some of the stereotypical YA themes. I was disappointed when I realized romance was involved. The story could have gone further if it would have steered away from that which made it seem a little predictable. 4/5

This was the first book I read for Bout of Books. I went in with low expectations, as I usually do with the lighter contemporaries, but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself really enjoying the story, and of course the characters. 4/5

Chew, Vol. 1: Taster's Choice by John Layman & Rob Guillory
Next in the readathon I picked up this graphic novel. This comic was weird and gross at times. Strangely enough those were the reasons why I really liked it. It's odd factors are what intrigued me. I think I'll keep reading these, as long as my library has them. 4/5

In Real Life by Cory Doctorow & Jen Wang
This was the last book I was able to get to in the readathon. I loved the art in this graphic novel. Especially the art that took place within the video game in the novel. It dealt with topics that you might not expect to find in a graphic novel. 4/5

One of my favorite reads of the year so far. I didn't really know what to expect going into this at first. Basically, I loved the characters, the story, the intrigue of wanting to know who Blue was. 5/5

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
My third graphic novel of the month! This is one that I was highly anticipating when I found out about it. Nimona was longer than the other two graphic novels I read. It can definitely be read in one sitting, but I put it down a couple of times just because I didn't want to rush through it since there was a bit more to it than the others I had read. Compared to other graphic novels I've read, I felt like I really got to know the characters in Nimona. I loved the art and the story equally. Great story. Even if you don't usually read graphic novels, you should consider picking this one up. 5/5

I also went to Bookcon in May. I only went on Saturday. Compared to last year, this year was a great improvement. I'm actually kind of sad that it's moving on to Chicago next year. I hope they'll bring it back to New York really soon. Well, that's it for May. Hope you all had a great reading month, and onto June!

  1. My Heart and Other Black Holes looks quite emotional, it's too bad it's a bit predictable :( Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda looks so interesting!
