January 2016 | Wrap Up

I feel like I'm getting back into the swing of things. Bout of Books was definitely one of the major factors in helping with that. The read-a-thon created this fun pressure of knowing that I have to read everyday that it got me through my slump. I read three books and a graphic novel in the month of January. This is the first month that I started using my TBR Jar and I must say it was quite successful. I was a little scared to do it, because I wasn't sure if I was actually going to want to read the book from the jar, but I did and I loved it.

Winger by Andrew Smith
This was my January TBR Jar pick, and I also read this for Bout of Books. This was actually the only book I read for the read-a-thon, but I'm glad I did because I feel like that is what helped push me though this eternal funk. This book in particular also helped. This story was exactly what I needed. I loved Ryan Dean as a main character and his voice. The book tore my heart open, and now  I need to read the sequel for closure. 5/5

Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway
This was a weird read for me. I enjoyed the story and the characters, but when I put the book down I didn't feel like I got anything from it. It didn't leave a long lasting impression on me. It's one of those books that you finish, you put back, and move on to the next book on your TBR. 4/5

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
I had planned on picking up Morgan Matson's other book, Since You've Been Gone, first. I always want to read it in the summertime, but for some reason I just never get around to reading it. I was in the mood for another contemporary and thought why not pick up Amy & Roger. I don't regret this at all. I loved the characters and most importantly the playlists! I have a review pending for this one, but all you have to know for now is that I loved it. 5/5

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, and Jose Marzan Jr.
Brian K. Vaughan is the writer for The Saga series and the other comic I'm currently reading, Paper Girls. Both have super interesting and original stories that I'm loving. I had heard a lot of great things about this series and wanted to check it out since I really enjoyed his other series. In this comic something crazy happens where all the men die now the world is run by women, and Yorick somehow survived and is the last man living. It wasn't a complete five stars for me just because there were some parts I didn't care for as much and kind of slowed the story down for me, but it got more exciting towards the end which means I'll probably love the next volumes. If you've read and like Brian K. Vaughan's other comics, you definitely need to check this one out, or even if you want to read something unique. 4/5

    1. That's one of the reasons I was afraid of doing the TBR jar. I'm loving Six of Crows so far, and I'm kind of glad it's taking me this long to read it, that way I don't rush through it and can enjoy it properly.

    1. I had expectations for Winger so I'm glad that I enjoyed it as much as I did, but Amy & Roger was a complete surprise. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
